We live in a time where every new piece of technology is scary. Voice recognition has been around for a very long time. Many of our devices from cell phones, to gaming consoles, and televisions can now operate from voice command. When I first heard of the Amazon Echo, I remember thinking that the last the we need is another device listening to us all of the time. Amazon Echo is cylinder shaped speaker that has seven built in microphone to pick up your voice in order to execute the various commands and answers question. No, she will not be able to provide you with a deep philosophical conversation and clean your home like Rosie from the Jetson’s. Amazon Echo is more like Tony Stark’s assistant, Jarvis, that has been modified to an affordable version for the everyday user. I thought what more could it do that my other devices could not. Well it turns out convenience is the key to making the Amazon Echo reign supreme over the rest. Consider it your personal assistant. I quickly got over the its ability to listen all the time, Amazon Echo it is triggered by a “Wake” word and can be muted as well, hence no need to be paranoid. If organization is important and you are constantly multitasking much like I am, then the Amazon Echo is a much needed device to make life a bit easier.
There are times that both my hands are occupied and I quickly need to write down a thought or to add something to my to-do list, or shopping list. Yes, I can go to my phone or pen and paper, but there entails the issue I often run into. If my hands are occupied assembling a lasagna, the last thing I want to do is stop in the middle of it to grab my phone. Same applies if I need to write down a quick thought. Amazon Echo, who name is Alexa, allows me to continue to cook in the kitchen, ask her to add something to my shopping my list, add to my to-do list, and while I am at it, I can ask her for an update on the game scores, the weather, and to read back to me tomorrows to-do list. Again let me re-iterate all this happens hands free. Alexa not only allows me to stream music from my Amazon Prime collection, but I can also ask Alexa to play one of my local radio stations. If you are thinking about the tons of music that you have purchased elsewhere, then no worries those can be uploaded for Alexa to access as well. No need to turn down the volume by hand, simply ask Alexa to lower the volume. The speaker on Alexa is pretty good as well. I wouldn’t recommend using her for a party but for some background tunes she is great. No more needing to grab your tablet or cell phone to play an audio book, Alexa can do that too. She can do math, tell you a joke and remind you to remove the lasagna from the oven in 45 minutes. As a minor feature Amazon Echo can also work as a blue-tooth speaker, hence friends can come over stream music from their devices as well. As long as you stay mindful that the Amazon Echo is a personal assistant and not maid, then you will find her to be priceless. With future updates we will continue to see Amazon Echo capability grow.
